Annual Race Ipsa Loquitur, 5K Walk/Run
in Memory of Katie Westbrook
The Duquesne Student Bar
Association is hosting the 12th Annual Race Ipsa Loquitur 5K Walk/Run Race on Saturday, October
11, 2008 at 11 a.m. on Duquesne’s campus. The
race will begin and end at the Law School.
The race is dedicated in memory of Katie Westbrook, with
proceeds donated to the Katie Westbrook Fund,
Pediatric Cancer Research Initiative.
Katie Westbrook was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer when she
was just 13 years old. Following her diagnosis, Katie spoke to the Duquesne
University faculty and students about her aspiration to, one day, become a member
of the legal community.
With her usual charm and charisma, Katie touched
the hearts of all in attendance. On June 3, 2001,
Katie was invited to the Law School's Commencement
where she was to receive an Honorary Degree. Hours
before the ceremony, Katie lost her battle with
cancer. She was only 15 years old.
Like Katie,
Duquesne University School of Law recognizes
the importance of zealous advocacy in the community.
Although Katie was never able to fulfill her
dream of becoming an attorney, we carry on, and
honor her commitment to the profession through
this Award. Katie was truly an advocate
for her cause, and will forever be remembered
as a brave young girl who fought a battle no
child should ever have to fight. We strive to
honor Katie with a successful race.
