On October 21, 2017, Duquesne University School of Law will offer a continuing legal education program with essential information for lawyers and others who are new board members or who wish to serve a nonprofit in the future. 101 on 501s will feature a panel of attorneys who have experience at both large and grassroots organizations in a variety of different disciplines.

The CLE will provide an overview of the roles of board members, including the basics of nonprofit corporate, tax and fundraising legal issues. Panel sessions will focus specifically on:  

  • Board responsibilities, duty of care and duty of loyalty
  • 15 documents to review before joining a nonprofit
  • Common compliance issues in executive compensation, solicitation registration, annual reporting requirements, and IRS filing requirements
  • Mergers and informal partnership arrangements
  • Intellectual property hot topics
  • Labor and employment hot topics

CLE Credit

The program offers three (3) hours of substantive CLE credit. Attendees interested in submitting pursuing credit in a state that accepts Pennsylvania CLE credits can request a Uniform Certificate of Attendance form.

Individuals who are not attorneys new to serving on a board or interested in serving on a board may attend the program for a reduced rate. Registration is required for all. 



$90 – Three-hour program with CLE credit

$50 – Three-hour program without CLE credit

Free – Duquesne University School of Law faculty and law students

Scholarships – Request consideration
