Compliance in a Post GDPR World: The Global Trend of Stricter Data Privacy and How that is Impacting Companies

The days of companies providing consumers with long forms filled with unrecognizable legalese are nearly all but extinct. In May of 2018, the European Union set a new bar for companies doing business with its citizens through the General Data Protection Regulation (the “GDPR”), requiring them to ensure transparent and consumer friendly data privacy. From consent to storage, the GDPR significantly changed the way that companies must handle the personal data of European consumers. However, it did not stop there. Following the implementation of the GDPR, a trend of strict consumer data privacy regulations is booming worldwide. With costly consequences for non-compliance, companies are left in need of significant legal guidance to navigate these unfamiliar, previously untreaded waters in an attempt to become compliant and to avoid significant penalties.
