Student Bar Association completes 'Challenge for Children's'

Duquesne Law's Student Bar Association (SBA) recently focused its philanthropic efforts on Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

Law student leaders organized three fundraisers during the academic year, the first a Duquesne Law ornament sale during the Christmas season. In spring semester, the group launched and successfully completed Challenge for Children’s: Students v. Faculty, during which faculty members pledged activities or prizes.

With collection jars at Coffee Tree Roasters in the Student Lounge and at the front desk in the law library, the group collected cash donations to unlock specific pledges offered by the faculty. Duquesne Law students, staff, and administrators donated to unlock pledges such as:

  • Prof. Kaufman wearing her wedding dress to school.
  • Prof. Oranburg organizing a rap session in class.
  • Prof. Norton sharing a family law-related soundtrack during a class lesson.
  • Profs. Jamison and Hall dressing up for class.
  • Assoc. Dean Rooksby and Profs. Jamison, Baicker-McKee, and Heppner pledging "No Call Days" and/or free bonus questions on spring final exams.
  • And Prof. Baicker-McKee riding his hoverboard to class.

Deans Kwisnek and Jordan then offered to match donation at the $50 and $100 levels, thereby adding to the program’s overall success.

In early May, SBA student leaders presented a check to Children's Hospital Foundation for more than $2,600.

SBA President Amanda L. Perry, who was instrumental in organizing the Challenge for Children’s, said the fundraiser may continue in coming years.

“Everyone had a great time tracking the faculty pledges,” says Perry. “We were all pleased at the campaign’s success.”

The outgoing president reported that the final portion of the fundraising effort involved a Rain or Shine Sale of Duquesne Law golf hats and umbrellas. “This might continue as well,” said Perry. “It’s always nice to rep your school. And people could always use a hat or umbrella!”
